Kevin Henkes Author Study

The first grade students completed an author study of Kevin Henkes in their classroom and the library. They explored Kevin Henkes' website, watched an interview with him, and read many of his picture books. During the author study, students discovered that Kevin Henkes personifies mice as characters, uses repetition in his words, and writes about feelings, anxieties, and relationships. Students were able to identify with the characters in his stories and were able to discuss the problem and solution in each book.

 In Chester's Way, based on the behavior of the main characters, students were able to identify and relate to the characteristics of a good friend. As a culminating activity, students created a class book titled: A Good Friend...
