Reading Aloud

Reading aloud daily to your child has a variety of benefits.  Children connect reading to pleasurable experiences and are more likely to become lifelong readers.  Vocabularies increase along with oral language development.  Children are able to expand their worlds by reading about lives they've never seen in places they've never been to.  Parents are able to help their children grapple with the difficult issues that they're facing. Since most children, until around grade 7 or 8, have a listening comprehension level higher than their reading ability, reading aloud to them is a great way to give them access to books they may not be able to read on their own.

In order to read aloud to your child, all you need are these three things:  a book, a library card, and a little time every night!

Please see the websites page for sites that give read aloud suggestions for different grade levels and interests.
